Cuttings of houseplants
Indoor plants and interior
Yearly top cuttings or leaf cuttings are the most common way to propagate potted plants, but there are several methods, such as root and woody cuttings. These methods are primarily used for outdoor shrubs and perennials. Cuttings are more popular than ever, and Norwegians are especially eager to both share and sell cuttings of beautiful plants.

Take the cutting
Take a tip cutting by cutting off the top of a branch with 3-4 leaves. Remove the lower leaves so that 1-2 mature leaves remain. Leaf cuttings are taken by taking a leaf or a piece of a leaf. Follow the steps below if you are going to transport the cutting before planting it out:Make a mini greenhouse out of a plastic bottle or a bag. Cut off the top part of the bottle about 10 cm below the cap.Cut a potato, make a hole in the cut surface, and plant the cutting here. You can also wrap wet paper or cotton around the stem.Place the cutting in the bottle or bag, and spray with a spray bottle before closing the bag or putting the top on the bottle.Transport with care. Cuttings are sensitive to both heat and cold.
Plant the cutting
Place the cutting in a pot with seed soil. Increase humidity by placing a propagation dome, a cut-off plastic bottle, or a plastic bag over the pot. Make sure there are a couple of ventilation holes.Place the cutting in a bright location, without direct sunlight – as it can get too hot in the mini greenhouse. It can take anywhere from a week to several months for the cuttings to root. Try gently tugging on the cutting. If it's stuck, it has likely rooted, and you can start easing off the cover and acclimating the plant to a drier climate. When the plant has grown enough and the roots reach the edge of the pot, it's time to replant it with nutrient-rich potting soil in a larger pot.
