Goldenrod – facts and advice on care
This classic plant only needs a little light and water for its tendrils to grow impressively long. Perfect for those who want the most greenery with the least effort.
This plant is one of several classic green plants that have become more and more trendy in recent years. The strikingly beautiful, heart-shaped foliage with patterns in yellow-green is probably one of the reasons for this. In addition, it is both easy to care for and versatile. You can have it as a hanging plant in a hanging basket, or on a shelf. But it can also climb with its aerial roots, if there is something to attach them to – for example, a plant support made of coconut or another porous material.
If you have four-legged friends, you should be aware that golden vine is poisonous to dogs and sometimes cats. Golden vine has irritating plant sap (helsenorge.no) that can cause discomfort to humans as well, so it is safest to put it out of reach of curious four-legged friends and small children.
You don't need a green thumb to keep a golden vine alive! It is among the most hardy and adaptable green plants we have.
Where does golden vine thrive best?
Light
Golden vine thrives in bright places, but preferably not in a lot of direct sunlight. It is especially important to keep it out of the scorching sun in spring and summer. How much light the leaves receive also has something to do with the pattern on the leaves of the variety that is variegated – the more light, the more yellow in the pattern.
Temperature
Normal room temperature is all the golden vine requires, summer or winter.
Humidity
The plant likes high humidity, but also tolerates drier air just fine. Feel free to spray the leaves with a spray bottle from time to time. This reminds the plant of its original climate, and makes it grow even more lush.
How to water golden vine?
Let the golden vine dry out slightly between each watering. Lift the pot to check if it is light or heavy. This gives you a much better indication of when it is time to water than just feeling the soil with your finger. Note that the plant needs more and more water in the summer than in the winter.
How to fertilize goldenrod?
If you want to give your goldenrod a little extra help to grow big and beautiful, you can give it a little liquid plant food once a month from spring to autumn.
