Think about how often you are going to be in the garden and plan accordingly. A garden does not maintain itself, and if you neglect it, it will soon turn into a small jungle. Instead, choose a very easy-to-maintain garden that only needs a little care, rather than wasting time on a French park variant that requires a full-time gardener.

During a large part of the year, you will be sitting inside looking out over your garden. Therefore, also plan based on the fact that the garden should be beautiful to look at from the kitchen or living room. For example, you can sow an oval lawn surrounded by beautiful plants, or place outdoor lighting along pathways and flower beds to create a great focal point.
