Create Your Own Christmas Arrangement

It’s not difficult to make a Christmas arrangement, but it never hurts to get some tips and inspiration before you start. A homemade Christmas arrangement is beautiful in your own home and makes a lovely hostess gift that will be greatly appreciated.

When planting multiple plants in a pot, a simple rule of thumb is to use one plant for height, one that fills out the middle, and one that drapes over the edge. This creates a good base structure and balance in the arrangement.

We’ve used evergreen branches for height, a Christmas rose for width, and ivy to fill it out nicely.

1. Place the plants in the pot before planting and try out different positions. It’s easier to see what looks best this way.
2. Think about where the arrangement will be placed. Will it have a front and back, or will it be viewed from all sides if placed in the center of a table?
3. Try to use plants that have similar water requirements.

You can create a Christmas arrangement in almost anything, as long as the base is waterproof. Let your imagination run wild! It’s perfectly fine to use plants that you might not typically associate with Christmas, such as succulents or other small plants.

Combine plants and candles to create an advent wreath from your Christmas arrangement. Here, we’ve decorated with moss, twisted hazel, nuts, pine, Brussels sprouts, apples, and succulents.

Make sure to place the plants so they don’t get damaged by the flame or heat from the candles, and always keep an eye on burning candles.

Plant an amaryllis in something you already have at home, like an old wooden box. Just remember to line the inside with plastic so the box isn’t damaged when you water it.

Plant some plants and place a candle on a flower dish with slightly raised edges. Make sure the candle isn’t too close to the plants, and always supervise burning candles. If you use moss, keep it moist to prevent it from catching fire easily.

Create a Christmas arrangement with all your favorite plants. Use regular indoor plants to fill out the arrangement and give it a different look, like ivy, pothos, pilea, or another houseplant.

Take a plant you already have at home, or use the opportunity to get some more indoor plants. After Christmas, you can replant them and enjoy them as potted plants. Two birds with one stone!
