Christmas gives us both something to look forward to and to remember; we decorate inside and out and draw energy from atmospheric lighting in gardens and on balconies.
1. Lights – Christmas lighting has become winter lighting
– Many people like to brighten up with string lights from Halloween all the way to February. One of the big trends in outdoor lighting is icicle lights. They provide plenty of light and a lovely atmosphere, says Julia Romberg-Stenersen, category director for dry goods at Plantasjen.

2. Christmas wreaths in new shapes
The classic pine wreath on the front door is also becoming popular indoors – we decorate with wreaths on kitchen cabinets, walls, and tables. Small wreaths around the napkins add a playful touch – and maybe you want to surprise someone with a truly special wreath? Imagine a proposal with an engagement ring attached to the napkin wreath, or a little riddle in each wreath around the table, or… yes, exactly – get creative! - For a more modern look – let the wreath spread out, become full, or even asymmetrical with a thick side and a thinner side.
- Brighten up the entrance by also wrapping lights around the wreath.
3. Bows

4. Evergreen plants
Rhododendron, boxwood, and thuja are evergreen garden plants that are top favorites among Norwegians.
– Evergreens keep the garden alive even during the darkest months of the year. Chinese juniper ’Stricta’ is a great example – it brings greenery and becomes extra atmospheric with lighting, says gardener Hans Jensen, category manager for seasonal plants.
5. Christmas flowers we recognize
The poinsettia is seeing a resurgence, while amaryllis and Christmas rose are appearing in more homes than before.
– The classic poinsettia is making a comeback, perhaps precisely because it is nostalgic. Younger generations want it again, says Julia Romberg-Stenersen.
Azalea also stands out as a favorite among young adults, as well as those over 60. Many of the classic Christmas flowers come in different colors and patterns, making it easy to find new favorites!

Tips from the gardener
As New Year’s Eve approaches, you can use Christmas flowers for new decorations.
– Hyacinths and amaryllis can be cut and placed in glass vases, perfect for the New Year’s table! Christmas roses in small pots create a delicate look both indoors and in the entrance if the temperature allows, says Hans Jensen.
The New Year’s atmosphere is completed with many small light sources, such as pillar candles, tealights, and preferably a string of lights among the flowers.

- The nostalgic Christmas is especially strong among young adults, with 35 percent of those aged 18–29 saying that nostalgia is the most important factor for the Christmas spirit.
- 55% of Norwegians think that colors are the most important for the Christmas feeling.

- 45% think that scent is the most important factor when creating Christmas atmosphere with plants.
- Door wreaths are moving indoors in 2025 – in kitchens, living rooms, and on the Christmas table.
- 8 out of 10 Norwegians plan to have an indoor Christmas tree this year – more than ever before.
- Interest in artificial Christmas trees is increasing, and this year 45% are choosing artificial trees – thanks to better quality.
- More than one in ten Norwegians create Christmas atmosphere with homemade table decorations.
- The poinsettia is still Norwegians’ favorite Christmas flower (33%), followed by amaryllis (15%).
